Nozemack's 10 Points Lead UMW Men's Lacrosse Past Va. Wesleyan, 25-12

Junior attacker J.D. Nozemack scored six goals and added four assists to lead the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team to a 25-12 victory over Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 1-1 on the season.

The Eagles jumped ahead with four straight goals to open the game. Jack-Henry Smith opened the scoring at 13:53, and Cameron Walker followed at 12:12 on an assist from Logan Green. Nozemack followed with two scores, giving the Eagles a 4-0 lead with 11:08 left in the first. After a Virginia Wesleyan score, the Eagles netted goals from Kevin Cruz and Nozemack, and the Eagles led, 6-1. The teams traded scores to close the perios, with Nozemack and Kristophe Newman scoring for the Eagles.

UMW scored three straight to start the second, as Smith, Garrett Keogh, and Cruz scored, building the lead to 11-3. The Marlins scored two straight before Nozemack posted another goal, and Smith scored his third of the day to move the score to 13-6. Walker scored a pair of goals to end the second, giving the Eagles a 15-7 margin at intermission.

The Eagles dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Marlins, 6-1. Nozemack, Ethan Castleman, Newman, Brandon Williams, and J.C. Reynolds scored the first five of the frame, ad Brandon Davis capped the scoring.

In the fourth, each team scored four goals, with Davis, Jackson Popeck, Jackson Davis, and Alex Olson scoring for UMW.

The Eagles led in shots, 64-32, and ground balls, 32-22. UMW was 24-30 on clears, while limiting the visitors to 16-30. Riley Green made seven saves in gaining the win, while Bode Weber made four stops in relief.

UMW will return to action on Tuesday when they visit Salisbury University at 4:00 p.m.
