UMW Men’s Lacrosse Falls at #3 York, 18-7, on Saturday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team fell to third-ranked York College, 18-7, on Saturday afternoon in York, Pa. The Eagles slip to 7-9 overall, and 1-4 in CAC play.

York opened the game with an early goal and the Eagles responded with one of their own as Chase Kapuscienski scored on an assist from Shane McKenzie to put the game at 1-1, 13:40 in. After another York goal, the Eagles took the lead as Josh Schulman scored off of a McKenzie assist and then Vinny Smiroldo scored off an assist from Logan Green in a man-up opportunity to put the Eagles ahead 3-2 with 9:37 to play. The Spartans closed out the quarter by scoring five straight to take a 7-3 lead. 

In the second quarter, York added two early goals. Kieran Burns put the game at 9-4 with a score at the 11:29 mark. The Spartans added four straight goals to go up 13-4 with 3:52 remaining. Before the half, Sean Tuite put a goal home off an assist by Green to put the Eagles down eight, 13-5.

York added an early goal in the third quarter, but the Eagles responded right back as Kapuscienski scored on an assist from Mike Colgan with 9:22 to play. The Spartans scored the last three goals of the quarter to go up 17-6. 

After a goal from the Spartans in a man-up opportunity, the Eagles capped the game by scored with 1:49 left. Grant Cragg added a goal on an assist by Will Mortimer.

Kapuscienski led the Eagles with three ground balls. Lucas Whittie made 17 saves in goal on the day.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday as they will travel to Frostburg State for a game at 4 p.m.
