UMW Men’s Lacrosse Tops McDaniel, 13-12, in OT on Tuesday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team topped McDaniel College, 13-12, in overtime on senior Shane McKenzie's game-winning goal as time expired on Tuesday afternoon in Westminster, MD. The Eagles improve to 2-1 on the season. McKenzie had three goals and two assists on the day. 

Chris White kept his hot scoring going from last game as he had the opening goal with 8:19 to play on an assist from Cole Hogan. Just 13 seconds later, Dyson Adams added another goal unassisted to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Cameron Walker scored his first career goal on an assist from Shane McKenzie in a man-up opportunity with 3:52 left in the quarter. McKenzie then added one of his own just 45 seconds later to put UMW ahead 4-0. The Green Terror added two goals right before the end of the quarter to pull within two, 4-2. 

Chase Kapuscienski began the scoring in the second quarter just 3:24 in to make the score 5-2, UMW. McDaniel added a goal on a man-up opportunity with 7:49 left in the half to again pull within two, 5-3. Hogan got on the board with 6:31 to play on an assist from Robert Tata. White scored off on an assist from Green with 5:14 left, and then White added another goal on an assist by McKenzie to give UMW an 8-3 lead at the half.

Out of the half, the Green Terror scored two goals in the first three minutes to get within three, 8-5. Kieran Burns ended that run and scored his first goal of the season on an assist from Hogan with 10:28 left in the third quarter. McDaniel added another goal with 8:28 left in the third quarter, but Hogan added his second of the game assisted by White with 2:16 remaining to give the Eagles a 10-6 advantage. With just 1:38 left in the quarter, McDaniel scored the last two goals to put the score at 10-8 going into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, McKenzie scored his second goal of the day off of an assist from Hogan in an extra-man opportunity. The Green Terror answered with a goal of their own at the 11:50 mark to get within two, 11-9. Hogan scored his third goal, unassisted, with 8:54 to play. McDaniel scored two straight goals to get within just one goal, 12-11, with 3:10 left in the game. The Green Terror tied the game at 12 a piece with 1:48 left and that score stood until the buzzer sounded, and the game headed to overtime. 

McDaniel had the first shot in overtime, but the ball went wide and allowed the Eagles to get the ball. UMW got the ball with 2:34 left and reeled off shots until McKenzie came up clutch for the Eagles as he scored with time expiring in overtime to win the game, 13-12. 

Tata picked up six ground balls, while Eli Ayer had five ground balls. Billy Senicola made 16 saves in goal for UMW. 

UMW won 19-29 face-offs, picked up 29 ground balls, and converted 17-20 clears. 

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday as they will host their first game of the season against Ursinus at 3 p.m.
