UMW Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Southern Virginia, 16-12, on Tuesday

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team fell to Southern Virginia University, 16-12, on a rainy Tuesday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va. The Eagles fall to 7-9 overall, and 3-5 in the CAC. Conor Healy and Chris White both scored three goals to lead UMW.

In the early going, UMW jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Will Mortimer got the scoring started on an assist from Kaleb Hunter with 9:42 remaining in the first half. White scored the second goal on an assist from Owen Dingman with 7:05 to play. Brandon Williams then got on the board as he scooped up a ground ball and then found the net with 6:01 remaining. Southern Virginia scored the last two goals of the quarter and UMW took a 3-2 lead into the second.

In the second quarter, Healy ended a two goal run from SVU as he scored just 25 seconds in. Healy added his second of the day, and then White scored on an assist from McKenzie with 10:57 to play that put UMW up 6-2. The Knights went on another two goal run and brought it to within tow, 6-4. Dingman scored with seven-seconds left on an assist from White to put UMW up 7-4 going into the half.

SVU scored two goals in the first 2:44 to cut the Eagles lead to 7-6. White added his third goal of the game on an assist from McKenzie with 9:43 left to take an 8-6 lead. From there, the Knights scored seven straight goals over a seven minute span to take a 13-8 lead. Healy ended the run with a goal from McKenzie with just 37 seconds left.

Mortimer scored to put UMW down three, 13-10, with 9:19 remaining in the fourth quarter and then Dingman scored to put them down two, 13-11. SVU then scored three straight to go up 16-11. Cole Hogan scored with 34 seconds left but UMW couldn't get any closer. 

Eli Ayer tied a career-high with 17 ground balls, and Robert Tata collected eight ground balls. Billy Senicola made 13 saves on the day.

UMW will be back in action in the first round of the CAC tournament as they will travel to CNU for a time TBA.
