UMW Men's Lacrosse Falls to Washington & Lee, 14-7, on Wednesday

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped a 14-7 decision to visiting Washington & Lee University on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 4-2 on the season.

After W&L scored the opening goal with 10:54 left in the first, the Eagles equalled the score with 7:50 remaining. Chris White scored on a man up opportunity on an assist from Robert Tata. UMW took the lead at 2-1 with 5:15 left in the first, as White scored on an Owen Dingman assist, and held the 2-1 advantage to the final horn of the quarter.

In the second, the Generals erupted for four straight goals to take a 5-2 lead. Cole Hogan cut the deficit to 5-3 with 1:19 left with an unassisted score, but W&L scored with nine seconds left to take a 6-3 lead to halftime.

Washington and Lee started the third quarter with a pair of goals, before Shane McKenzie scored unassisted with 8:48 left. After another Generals tally extended the lead to 9-4, Dingman scored unassisted with 6:03 left. W&L ended the frame with two more goals, to build an 11-5 lead entering the fourth.

The Eagles showed signs of life to start the final frame, as Conor Healy scored on a Dingman assist with 13:45 left, and Dingman scored again with 9:00 left, to trim the margin to 11-7. But the Generals scored the final three goals of the game for the 14-7 final margin.

The Generals led in shots, 39-27, and in faceoffs, 14-10. W&L collected 35 ground balls to 27 for the Eagles. UMW was 1-4 on man up opportunities. UMW goalkeeper Billy Senicola made 12 saves between the pipes for the Eagles, while Davis King had seven ground balls to lead UMW.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday when they visit Catholic University at 1:00 p.m.
