Dingman Scores Game-Winner for UMW Men’s Lacrosse to Defeat Widener University, 12-11, in Overtime

Senior Owen Dingman scored the game-winning goal for the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team to defeat Widener University, 12-11, in overtime in Chester, PA. The Eagles improve to 4-1 on the season.

In the early going, Shane McKenzie got the scoring started just 2:27 into the game. The Pride scored the next two goals and took a 2-1 lead into the second quarter. 

Connor Healy tied the game up in the second quarter. Widener added another goal and took the lead 3-2, but McKenzie scored again to tie the game up at 3 with 12:22 remaining in the second quarter. Chris White got in the scoring column with 11:39 left to give UMW a 4-3 lead. The Pride scored four straight goals to close the half and went up 7-4.

Widener scored the first three goals of the second half and held a 10-4 lead with 8:30 left in the third quarter. White scored his second of the game with 7:27 to bring the Eagles within five, 10-5. The Pride added another goal with just over one minute remaining in the third quarter. Ben Byrne tallied a goal on an assist from Dingman to bring the Eagles within five, 11-6 with 17 seconds remaining in the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Chase Kapuscienski scored a goal with 11:51 remaining. Dingman added a goal with 10:06 to play, and then Kapuscienski added another with 3:02 left to bring the Eagles within two, 11-9. White put the Eagles down 11-10 as he scored on an assist from McKenzie with 2:49 left. White then added the game-tying goal with 2:35 on an assist from Tata. The defense played outstanding for UMW in the fourth quarter as they allowed zero goals.

With 2:03 remaining in overtime, Dingman scored the game-winner and helped the Eagles defeat the Pride 12-11. Billy Senicola recorded eight saves for UMW on the day.

The Eagles outshot the Pride 42-29, and won the ground ball battle 34-30. UMW converted 16-26 faceoffs. 

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday as they host Washington & Lee at 3:30 p.m.
