Senior middie Owen Dingman scored three goals and added a pair of assists to lead a balanced attack as the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team defeated Randolph-Macon College, 14-6, on Wednesday afternoon in Ashland, Va. The Eagles square their season record at 1-1.
The Eagles jumped on top early, as Conor Healy scored on a Cole Hogan assist at 12:52 of the first, and Chase Kapuscienski added another with 10:28 remaining. The Yelllow Jackets would rech the scoreboard with 2:25 left, and the Eagles carried a 2-1 edge to the second quarter.
The two teams traded goals back and forth throughout the second. UMW netted the first goal, by Hogan on a Dingman assist with 10:16 left. After a Yellow Jackets goal, Kieran Burns scored with 3:09 remaining. Randolph-Macon followed with a goal, but UMW found the last score of the frame with 31 seconds left on a man-down goal by Shane McKenzie to go to intermission with a 5-3 lead.
The Eagles built a comfortable cushion in the third, outscoring the Jackets, 5-0. Helay scored unassisted with 13:25 left, and Chris White followed with a man-up score on a McKenzie pass with 12:33 left. McKenzie followed with another tally with 8:08 on the clock, and Burns followed at 5:35. Dingman closed the third with a man-up goal assisted by Alex Olson with 22 seconds left.
Leading 10-3, the Eagles saw RMC score first in the fourth, but followed with scores from Sean Tuite on a Robert Tata pass with 14:07 left and again from White with 12:48 to go on a feed from Dingman. The teams traded goals to close the affair, with Dingman netting a pair of scores in the final 10 minutes.
Mary Washington led in shots, 47-27, as well as ground balls, 42-32. The Eagles won 13 of 24 faceoffs, and cleared 16 of 18 attempts. Billy Senicola had 12 saves in picking up the win in goal, while Lucas Whittie also added one save.Eli Ayer led the way with eight ground balls.
The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they host Shenandoah University at 1 p.m.
