The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped a 14-9 decision to visiting Christopher Newport University on Wednesday afternoon, to fall to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

The Eagles jumped ahead first, as junior Owen Dingman scored on a Chase Kapuscienski assist in the opening minute. The Captains responded with the next three scores to take a 3-1 advantage, but Dingman scored again on a Miles Davis assist with 6:37 left in the first quarter.

After another Captains goal, Dingman completed the hat trick for the Eagles, scoring with 1:42 remaining on a Jack Carver assist. The Eagles, trailed, 4-3, after one period.

CNU opened the second quarter scoring to take a 5-3 advantage, but the Eagles went on to score the next three tallies to take a 6-5 lead to halftime. Carver scored on a man up opportunity with 8:10 left, and Davis scored on a Shane McKenzie assist with 6:15 to go. McKenzie then scored to give UMW the lead with 4:28 before intermission, and the score held until the halftime horn.

The Captains forged ahead with a pair of scores, but Carver tied the score with 4:42 left in the third, on a Mike Marson assist. CNU closed the quarter with two more goals to lead, 9-7, entering the fourth.

CNU opened the fourth with a goal to advance its lead to three, but the Eagles answered with a score from Chris White on a Davis feed with 11:37 left. UMW trimmed the deficit to 10-9 on a Vince Smiroldo score with 9:51 to go. The Captains pulled away with four scores to end the game.

Dingman scored three times and Carver added two goals and an assist for UMW.

CNU led in shots, 45-34, and ground balls, 54-46. Billy Senicola had 11 saves in goal for the Eagles, and Davis had six ground balls.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they visit Southern Virginia University at noon.
