UMW Men's Lacrosse Edges Randolph-Macon, 13-12; Delaney Gains First Win at UMW

Senior Mike Marson scored three goals and added one assist and Miles Davis and Owen Dingman each scored twice to lead the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team to a 13-12 win over Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday afternoon at a chilly Battleground. UMW head coach Drew Delaney picks up his first win as mentor of the Eagle program.

In a tight contest that remained close throughout, UMW took the lead on a Davis man up goal with 7:57 remaining in the first. After a Yellow Jacket score, Conor Healy scored on a Davis feed with 2:46 to play to put UMW back in front.

RMC closed the quarter with a score and added another with 13:58 left in the second to take a 3-2 lead, Dingman scored his first tally with 9:23 left. The Yellow Jackets answered with a pair of scores to up their advantage to 5-3, but the Eagles scored on a Josh Lambert goal with 6:02 left, and tied the score on Davis' second tally with 5:04 remaining.

Randolph-Macon sandwiched a pair of goals around a Dingman score, and the guests led at intermission, 7-6.

After RMC scored to start the third, UMW rallied for five of the next six goals. Jack Carver scored on a Vince Smiroldo assist with 8:39 left, and Marson followed with 1:43 left in the third. RMC scored to open the fourth, but goals from Marson with 10:00 left, Eli Ayer with 9:54 left, and Drew Carlson with 8:45 to go gave UMW a 12-9 advantage.

The Yellow Jackets scored to cut the margin to 12-10, but soph Shane McKenzie scored the eventual game winner with 4:40 remaining on a Carlson assist. The Yellow Jackets scored twice late, but their final attempt was taken away in the final seconds.

The Eagles led in shots, 38-35, and in ground balls, 52-44. Sam Wasson had 11 saves in goal for UMW, while Brian Davies had 12 for RMC.

UMW will be back in action on February 22, when they visit Albright at 4 p.m.
