The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped its 2017 season opener on Saturday at Hampden-Sydney College by a score of 13-9 in head coach Drew Delaney's first game for the Eagles.

The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter behind two goals by senior Mike Marson and one goal by sophomore Shane McKenzie. The Tigers scored with just seconds remaining in the first quarter to cut the Eagles' lead to 3-1.

The Tigers jumped into the lead after a five-goal second quarter to take the halftime lead, but goals by junior Owen Dingman and senior Drew Carlson kept the Eagles close, going into the half down 6-5. The Tigers scored in the opening minute of the quarter before Dingman found the back of the net, but the Tigers answered with a pair of goals shortly after. Carlson stopped the bleeding at the 8:16 mark of the quarter but another pair of goals before the half put the Tigers back in the lead.

The Tigers opened the third quarter with three unanswered goals to extend their lead to 9-5 before Marson scored with five seconds left to keep the Eagles within three.

The two teams traded goals for the entire fourth quarter, with goals for the Eagles coming from Marson and Carlson. The Tigers outscored the Eagles 4-3 in the fourth quarter to maintain their lead, and give the Eagles their first loss.

Marson led the game in goals with five and nine shots on goal while a pair of Tigers scored four goals each. Dingman tallied three assists to go along with his lone goal and sophomore Robert Tate also pitched in an assist.

The Eagles will be back in action in their home opener on Wednesday, Feb. 15 against Randolph-Macon at the Battlegrounds at 3 p.m.
