UMW's Sam Wasson named CAC Men's Lax Defensive Player of the Week

YORK, Pa. -- Salisbury senior Thomas Cirillo and Mary Washington sophomore Sam Wasson were tabbed as the CAC Men's Lacrosse Players of the Week for Feb. 23, 2016.   

Offensive Player of the Week

Salisbury senior Thomas Cirillo was named the CAC Offensive Player of the Week after totaling seven goals and nine assists in a trio of wins for the Sea Gulls, including two against nationally-ranked opponents. Cirillo was a major part of SU's comeback win over No. 2 Lynchburg, scoring twice to tie the game in the third quarter and assisting on the game-winning goal. After his two-goal, four-assist performance against Lynchburg, Cirillo followed that up with a two-goal, six-assist outing against No. 20 Montclair State.

Mary Washington sophomore Sam Wasson earned CAC Defensive Player of the Week accolades after opening the season with three standout performance in goal for the Eagles, who are off to a 2-1 start. Wasson registered 11 saves in a 7-5 loss to Hampden Sydney to open the season, then had 10 saves in a 14-6 win over Randolph-Macon and 10 more in a 15-6 win over McDaniel. He boasts a 62% save percentage and a 6.33 goals against average so far this season.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

Salisbury is ranked No. 2 in both the USILA and Nike/Lacrosse Magazine Rankings, while York and Frostburg State are receiving votes in the USILA poll ... Salisbury (3-0), York (2-0) and Frostburg State (1-0) remain unbeaten this spring ... All nine CAC teams have now opened their seasons ... Christopher Newport is 1-1 on the year with 10-9 loss to Washington & Lee and a 12-8 triumph over Ferrum. Brandon Moloney led the Captains with 12 ground balls and five caused turnovers throughout the first two games, including a career-high seven ground balls vs. Ferrum ... Frostburg State's Keegan Colegrove opened the year with three goals and two assists in a 16-4 win over Bridgewater. Nate Collins and Tate Rolland also contributed three goals each for the Bobcats ... Sophomore Mike Marson was instrumental in both of Mary Washington's wins this week, scoring 10 goals and adding three assists for 13 points. He had six goals and an assist in the Eagles' 14-6 win at Randolph-Macon, and added four goals and two assists in a 15-6 win over McDaniel ... Marymount freshman Bryan Mcmanus bursted onto the collegiate stage this past week, breaking school records after just two games with his 15 total points. Mcmanus tallied three goals and two assists in the season-opening loss to Catholic, before notching seven goals and three assists in a 14-12 CAC win over Southern Virginia. His 10-point outing vs. SVU tied the MU program record set in 1998 by Brian Rosenberg ... Max Alderman collected a career-best 19 saves in St. Mary's season-opener ... Southern Virginia's Casey Rich led the team with five goals, tying his career-high, and two assists against Ferrum in the season opener game on Feb. 18. He also scored two goals in Saturday's loss to Marymount ... Wesley's Sam Seibert scored a team-high four goals in the Wolverines only game this weekend, a 15-12 loss to Shenandoah ... York's Andrew Gamble helped the Spartans to wins over Eastern, 9-2, and Washington & Jefferson, 20-1, to start the year. Gamble totaled five goals and four assists throughout the two contests, and is now just three points shy of tying his brother Josh for second on the Spartans' all-time scoring list with 175 points. Gamble is also four goals away from tying Josh for second on the all-time goals list at 120. Goalkeeper Caleb Abney totaled 10 saves and allowed zero goals in 76:54 o action vs. Eastern and W&J. Abney's 2-0 start pushes his school record for goal keeper victories to 38. The ten saves pushes his school record total to 536.
