Marson's Score with Two Seconds Left Lifts UMW Men's Lax Past Catholic, 15-14

Junior Mike Marson scored the game winning goal with two seconds, capping a crazy final minute, to lead the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team to a 15-14 victory at Catholic University on Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C. The Eagles improve to 6-8 on the year, while Catholic falls to 8-4.

After Catholic scored the first two goals of the game, freshman Shane McKenzie scored for the Eagles to trim the score to 2-1 with 12:19 left in the first. After another Cardinals score, the Eagles scored three straight to assume the lead. McKenzie scored with 8:09 left, and Owen Dingman tallied his first of the day with 2:48 left on a McKenzie assist.

Marson put the Eagles ahead with 1:15 left, but the Cards scored with 56 seconds left to tie the score. Jack Carver gave the Eagles a 5-4 advantage after one, scoring with 21 seconds left on a Marson assist.

The Eagles seemed to pull away to start the second, as Noah Dewey scored with 8:39 left on a Miles Davis assist, and Dewey scored again with 6:20 to go. Dingman scored with 2:59 to go to push the lead to 8-4, but CUA scored twice in the final 30 seconds to cut the deficit to 8-6 at halftime.

Carver scored on a Dingman assist with 6:38 left in the third, but Catholic charged back with two goals to cut the lead to 9-8. Drew Carlson scored on a Davis pass with 2:51 left, but Catholic closed the third with a score to move the score to 10-9 Eagles entering the fourth.

Catholic started the fourth with a goal to tie the score, but the Eagles netted goals from Davis at 8:01 and again at 6:39, and another from McKenzie with 4:34 to go to take a 13-10 lead. Catholic answered with three quick goals to tie the score with 3:18 left.

Carver scored with 34 seconds left on a Dewey pass, but again Catholic scored with 14 seconds left to again tie the score. But Marson found the game winner with just two seconds left to send the Eagles home with their sixth win of the season.
