UMW Men's Lacrosse Tops St. Mary's, 13-7, in Wednesday CAC Action

Miles Davis, Mike Marson, and Drew Carlson each scored three goals to lift the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team to a 13-7 win at St. Mary's College on Wednesday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Eagles improve to 5-8 overall, and 3-3 in CAC play.

After the Seahawks scored the game's first goal, Davis scored unassisted with 4:59 remaining to knot the score at 1-1, which is where the game stood after the first quarter. Freshman Shane McKenzie opened the second with a goal assisted by Marson, before the Seahawks tied the score at 2-2.

The Eagles scored the next three goals, with Marson scoring with 7:54 left, McKenzie scoring his second of the day with 1:21 to go, and Carlson beating the second quarter horn on an assist from Davis with one second left. UMW led at halftime, 5-2.

Both offenses opened up in the third quarter, with the Eagles taking the frame, 5-4. Jack Carver scored on a Marson assist in the first minute, before Marson scored on a Davis assist with 11:15 remaining.

Carlson and Marson scored following a Seahawk goal, and preceding three St. Mary's tallies. Davis capped the third quarter scoring with 11 seconds left to give UMW a 10-6 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Davis scored with 13:57 left to up the lead to 11-6. Carlson scored on an Owen Dingman assist with 8:43 remaining, and Vince Smiroldo scored with 5:59 left on a Cole Hogan pass to cap the scoring.

The Eagles led in shots, 49-25, and ground balls, 30-23. The Eagles won 18 of 24 faceoffs, and goalie Sam Wasson had eight saves for UMW.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday when they visit Catholic University at 1:00 p.m.
