UMW Men's Lacrosse Falls at #4 York, 16-9, on Saturday in CAC Play

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team drpped a 16-9 decision at fourth-ranked York College on Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Eagles slip to 3-7 on the season.

The Spartans jumped ahead with four unanswered goals in the first quarter and led, 4-0, after 15 minutes of play. In the second, York scored three more before the Eagles got on the board, as senior Mack Cary scored on a Miles Davis assist with 7:04 remaining on a man-up opportunity. York closed the half with a pair of goals and led, 9-1, at intermission.

In the third quarter, after York scored first, the Eagles answered with a pair of goals,a s Shane McKenzie scored on a Mike Marson assist with 11:48 left, and Davis scored unassisted with 9:33 remaining. York neetted two more scores to move the score to 12-3, before Marson closed the third with a goal assisted by Davis with 1:10 left.

Both offenses opened up in the fourth quarter, as nine goals were scored, including five from the Eagles. Noah Dewey scored with 12:21 to go, and Davis followed just 22 seconds later to cut the deficit to 13-6. York scored twice over the next three minutes with two goals eight seconds apart, but the Eagles rallied with the next two.

Jack Carver scored on an Owen Dingman assist with 8:19 left, and again two minutes later on a Davis feed. After York's 16th tally, Vince Smiroldo capped the scoring for UMW with 1:40 remaining.

York led in shots, 50-21, and in ground balls, 40-27. Sam Wasson made 13 saves in goal for UMW while Eli Ayer collected 10 ground balls. Three goalies combined for seven saves for York. 

The Eagles were led by Davis' two goals and three assists, while Carver scored twice.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit Christopher Newport University at 4:00 p.m. in another CAC showdown.
