UMW Men's Lacrosse Tops Southern Virginia, 11-8, in Saturday CAC Action

Miles Davis scored four goals and added one assist, and Noah Dewey scored three goals to lead the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team over Southern Virginia University, 11-8, on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground Complex. The Eagles improve to 3-4 on the season and 1-0 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

The Eagles scored the first goal of the game with 8:58 left in the first quarter when Shane McKenzie found Jack Carver to put UMW up 1-0. Southern Virginia responded with two goals, but the Eagles tied it up at 2-2 with 1:33 left in the first when Davis scored on an assist from Carver.

In the second, Noah Dewey scored in the first nine seconds off an assist from Mack Cary. Southern Virginia scored 30 seconds later to tie the score at 3-3. Davis scored again for the Eagles to take the lead back, but Southern Virginia scored three unanswered to take a 6-4 lead. Davis scored again with 1:41 left in the half to cut the deficit to 6-5.

In the third, Davis found Dewey to even the score at 6-6. The Knights answered with a goal with 35 seconds left to take back the lead. The Eagles came out firing in the fourth, scoring the first four goals of the period from Carver, McKenzie, Dewey, and Davis to take a 10-7 lead. Southern Virginia scored again with 3:36 left to cut the lead to two, but McKenzie secured the win for the Eagles with 1:23 left, capping the scoring for the game at 11-8.

In addition to Davis' four goals and one assist and Dewey's three goals, McKenzie added two goals and two assists, while Carver had two goals and three assists.

The Eagles won 16 of 22 faceoffs and led in ground balls, 44-39. Southern Virginia led in shots 35-33. Sam Wasson had nine saves in goal for the Eagles.

The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday against Guilford College at the River City Sportsplex in Midlothian, Va. at 3:30 pm.
