Marson's Big Day Leads UMW Men's Lax to 15-6 Win Over McDaniel

Sophomore Mike Marson scored four goals and dished out two assists to lead the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team to a 15-6 win over McDaniel College on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground Complex. The Eagles improve to 2-1 on the season.

The Eagles started strong, jumping to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter on goals from Marson, Noah Dewey, and Miles Davis. After Davis' goal with 19 seconds remaining on the clock in the first, McDaniel won the faceoff and scored to cut the deficit to 5-1 in the final seconds.

Dewey and Owen Dingman each scored in the first three minutes of the second to up the lead to 7-1. McDaniel scored at the 8:56 mark, but the Eagles responded with goals from Vince Smiroldo and Jack Carver to head into the half with a 9-2 lead.

In the third, the Eagles continued their strong defensive effort, giving up only one goal, which came in the final two minutes of the period. Marson scored two more in the frame to cushion the Eagles' lead to 11-3.

McDaniel went on a 3-1 run to start the fourth, narrowing the deficit to 12-6. The Eagles responded with three goals from Dingman, Carver, and Davis to capture the win at 15-6.

In addition to Marson's four goals and two assists, Dewey and Davis each scored three. Carver and Dingman added two goals, and Smiroldo had one.

The Eagles led in shots 40-23, and won 19 of 24 faceoffs. UMW led in ground balls 51-29. Sam Wasson of UMW and Eric Ritchie of McDaniel each had 10 saves in goal.

The Eagles return to action next Saturday as they visit Ursinus at 2:00 pm.
