UMW Men's Lacrosse Tops Christopher Newport, 8-7, in CAC Tourney First Round

Senior Chris Garcia scored the game winning goal with 2:38 remaining in the fourth quarter to lead the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team to an 8-7 victory over Christopher Newport University in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday in Newport News, Va.

The Eagles scored first, as seniors Teddy Blyskal and Greg Smith teamed up for the first goal of the game with 10:20 left in the first quarter. Christopher Newport scored two straight to take a 2-1 lead, but senior Jack Bondurant scored on an Owen Dingman assist with 2:57 left in the first.

The Captains scored with 41 seconds left in the first to take a 3-2 lead, but Garcia scored just 15 seconds later to tie the score after the first 15 minutes. In the second, Jared Krikorian scored on a Smith assist with 7:11 on the clock, and Blyskal followed with 34 seconds left before intermission, as the Eagles led, 5-3.

CNU answered after halftime, tying the score with a pair of third quarter goals. Garcia put the Eagles back ahead, 6-5, with 7:40 left in the third on a Miles Davis assist, but CNU answered 29 seconds later to tie the score, and the teams entered the fourth quarter tied at 6-6.

Greg Smith started the fourth quarter by scoring on a Davis assist with 13:17 left. The Captains would tie the score at seven with 4:31 remaining, but Garcia scored unassisted with 2:38 left for the eventual game winner.

Christopher Newport led in shots, 41-32, and in ground balls, 41-29. Freshman Colin Bressan made 17 saves for UMW, while Garcia grabbed four ground balls in addition to his career-high three scores.

The Eagles will visit Frostburg StateUniversity in the CAC semifinals on Saturday. Game time has yet to be announced.
