UMW Women's Lax Pulls Away to Defeat Marymount, 18-10, in Regular Season Finale

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse defeated Marymount University, 18-10, on Saturday in the regular season finale. The Eagles improve to 9-7 on the season, and advance to next week's Capital Athletic Conference Tournament.

Marymount started strong, scoring the first two goals of the game. The Eagles then scored four straight, led by a pair of goals from senior Corinne Wiederkehr and solo tallies from Emily Mott and Holly Hudson. Marymount answered with three straight scores to take a 5-4 lead with 15:55 remaining.

Mary Washington took charge, with Hudson scoring goals with 7:05 and 6:01 remaining, and Mo Sunderland adding another with 5:13 left on a Mott assist to take a 7-5 lead into halftime.

The Eagles continued to charge to start the second half, as Wiederkehr scored twice in the opening minute, and Hudson scored with 27:06 left to up the advantage to 10-5. After a Marymount tally cut the score to 10-6, the Eagles reeled off five straight goals.

Kelsey Vincent scored with 25:55 remaining, and Ashlyn Dacey scored three minutes later. Mott scored with 21:39 to play, and was followed with scores from Vincent and Wiederkehr to up the lead to 15-6.

Marymount scored three of the next four goals to close the gap to 16-9, but UMW saw Wiederkehr and Dacey score to put the game away. Marymount scored late to cut the final to 18-10.

Wiederkehr scored six goals on seven shots, and Hudson added four for UMW. The Eagles led in shots, 32-16, and ground balls, 23-14. Taylor Paige had four saves for UMW, while Sunderland had four ground balls and five draw controls for the Eagles.

Mary Washington gains the fifth seed in the CAC Tournament, and will visit fourth seeded Christopher Newport on Tuesday.
