UMW Men's Lax Falls to Ursinus, 6-2, on Saturday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped a 6-2 decision to Ursinus College on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles fall to 2-1 on the season.

In a defensive battle throughout, the Eagles fell behind, 1-0, after one period, but tied the score at 1-1 with 9:20 left in the second quarter on a Greg Smith goal assisted by Jack Bondurant. The Bears regained the lead before halftime with a score with 4:06 left in the quarter.

Ursinus extended its lead in the third with a pair of goals, and added another to start the fourth quarter. UMW scored on a Bondurant goal with 11:16 remaining, but would come no closer, as Ursinus capped the scoring with a goal with 4:58 left.

The Bears led in shots, 29-23, and in ground balls, 27-17. Ursinus was dominant in the faceoff circle, winning 10 of 11 faceoffs. UMW goalkeeper Pete Shammas made eight saves, while Brian Neff had 11 for Ursinus.

Mary Washington will return to action on March 11 when they visit Washington & Lee University at 7:00 p.m. in Lexington.
