Eagles Soar Past Hampden-Sydney in Season Opener, 18-9

Fredericksburg, Va.-- The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team posted an impressive 18-9 victory over Hampden-Sydney in the season opener on Sunday. Seven different Eagles had goals on the day, including three hat tricks.

Billy Kelly got the scoring started off an assist from John Bohlinger a minute and a half into the contest. HSC answered right back off the ensuing faceoff, with Abbot Wallenborn scoring unassisted to tie the game at 1-1. Griffin Burke and Luke Dick scored back to back goals, just a minute apart to increase the lead to 3-1. The Tigers got a goal from Duncan Morris to cut the deficit to one, but Chris Garcia netted a goal to make the lead 4-2 at the end of the first.

Morris scored again, five minutes into the second quarter, before UMW rattled off eight straight, spanning just about 15 minutes. Billy Kelly scored four of his seven over the span, with John Bohlinger scoring twice. Joey Marson and Luke Dick also had goals during the spurt to give the Eagles a 12-3 lead late into the third. 

Kelly and Dick opened up the fourth quarter with goals, that sealed the win for UMW. Bohlinger, Marson and Jared Krikorian also scored in the final stanza to lead the Eagles to victory.

Billy Kelly finished with seven goals, while Bohlinger (3), Dick (3), and Joey Marson (2) each scored more than one. Krikorian, Griffin Burke, and Chris Garcia also scored in the contest. The Eagles outshot the Tigers 44-23 in the high paced contest. Zach DelGrosso made five saves in the contest to earn the win.
