Strong Second Quarter Leads UMW Men's Lax to 12-8 Win Over #17 Plattsburgh State

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team broke open a tight contest with four second half goals en route to a 12-8 win over #17 Plattsburgh State University on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 6-2 on the season.

The eagles jumped ahead early as John Bohlinger scored on a Joey Marson assist just 35 seconds into the game to take a 1-0 lead, but the Cardinals answered with a pair of goals in the nest three minutes to take a 2-1 advantage. Senior Paul Tunick scored on a Marson assist with 8:35 left in the first, and Bohlinger scored on a Marson feed with 5:51 left to return the lead to UMW. Plattsburgh tied the scored moments later, but junior Billy Kelly put the Eagles up, 4-3, with 3:15 left on a Luke Dick assist. The Cardinals scored late to tie the score heading to period two.

In the second, the Eagles outscored the guests, 4-1, to take the lead for good. Marson scored on a Dick assist with 13:10 left, and Bohlinger followed at 9:14 on a Sean Dacey pass. After the Cardinals cut the deficit to 6-5, Dacey scored unassisted with 6:35 left, and Kelly scored on a Chip Pittard pass with 1:23 left to cap the half scoring.

After Plattsburgh scored to open the third, UMW scored three straight to push the lead to 11-6. Marson, Dacey, and Kelly scored in the run. After a Plattsburgh score with 1:35 left, Marson scored again to push UMW's advantage to 12-7. The lone goal in the fourth came from the visitors to cut the final deficit to 12-8.

Plattsburgh led in shots, 48-30, and in ground balls, 40-29. Junior Zack Del Grosso made 20 saves in net for UMW, while Johnny Esposito led the Eagles with six ground balls.

Marson had three goals and three assists to pace UMW, while ohlinger and Kelly each scored three times. Brendan Damm had two goals and an assist for the Cardinals.

Mary Washington will return to action next saturday when they visit Wesley College in Capital Athletic Conference action at 1:00 p.m.
