Dick's Seven Points Leads UMW Men's Lax to 13-6 Win at Goucher

Junior attacker Luke Dick scored five goals and added two assists to lead the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team to a 13-6 win at Goucher College on Wednesday afternoon in Towson, Md. Billy Kelly had five points for UMW, who improves to 4-1 on the season.

The Gophers held a decided shot advantage in the first quarter, 13-6, but the score was tied at two after 15 minutes. After goucher scored first, Dick scored his first goal of the day with 7:54 remining unassisted. Goucher regained the lead, but Dick scored again with 17 seconds left on a Billy Kelly asisst to tie the score heading to period number two.

After Goucher scored to take a 3-2 advantage, UMW reeled off the next 10 goals of the game, extending to the fourth quarter. Senior Sean Dacey started the onslaught with 9:53 remaining in the second, and was followed by Dick again with 8:48 left until halftime on a Kelly assist. Dacey scored again with 2:08 left, giving UMW a 5-3 halftime advantage.

In the third, UMW scored five unanswered, with John Bohlinger and Dick scoring 26 seconds apart with nine minutes left, and Bohlinger adding another with 6:43 left on another Kelly feed. Kelly then finished scores with 5:32 and 3:24 left to give UMW a 10-3 lead heading to the final quarter.

The Eagles used goals from Chip Pittard, Dick, and Griffin Burke to lead, 13-4, before Goucher scored twice late to cap the scoring at 13-6.

Goucher led in shots, 38-36, and in ground balls, 40-39. Sophomore Zack Del Grosso had another fine game in nets for UMW, making 17 saves.

Mary Washington will host Whittier College on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. on the UMW Campus Rec Field, located off of U.S. Route 1.
