UMW Men's Lax Drops Opener at Hampden-Sydney, 9-8, in Final Seconds

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team fell behind early, rallied back to tie the score, but fell with 1.6 seconds left at Hampden-Sydney College on Saturday in both teams' season opener.

The Eagles scored first, as junior Luke Dick scored unassisted with 12:01 remaining in the first. The Togers then scored five of the game's next six goals (with Dick adding a second tally for UMW), and led, 5-2 with 7:41 remaining in the second quarter. Junior Billy Kelly scored the first of his four goals to cut the deficit to 5-3, but the Tigers scored with 42 second left in the second to take a 6-3 advantage to halftime.

The Eagles rallied back in the third quarter, as Kelly scored with 13:57 left on a Chris Garcia assist, and again 1:27 later unassisted. After the Tigers quelled the momentum with a score, Kelly scored again on a Garcia assist with 3:28 left to cut the deficit back to one at 7-6. Hampden Sydney scored with 1:05 remaining, but Garcia scored to move the score to 8-7 with 38 ticks left in the quarter.

The defenses tightened in the fourth quarter, but UMW found the tying score at 7:29 left as Matt ganskopp scored a man-up tally on a Luke Dick pass. Then, with just 1.6 seconds left, the Tigers found the nets for the game winner from Ryan Martin.

UMW led in shots, 37-32, With the Tigers holding a 38-25 lead in ground balls. HSC won 15 of 22 faceoffs, and scored three extra-man goals. Zack Del Grosso had seven saves for UMW in goal.

Mary Washington will have its home opener on Wednesday as they host Randolph-Macon College at 3:00 p.m.
