UMW Men's Lax Falls to Goucher in Overtime, 7-6

Sophomore attacker Luke Dick scored three goals and added one assist, and the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team never trailed in regulation after the first quarter, but fell to visiting Goucher College, 7-6 in overtime on Wednesday at the Battleground. UMW falls to 4-1, while the Gophers improve to 7-1.

Goucher opened the scoring in the first minute, and held a 1-0 lead until the Eagles tied the score with 4:27 to play in the quarter as Joey Marson scored on a Dick assist. UMW took the lead with 56 seconds remaining in the quarter, as Dick scored on a Billy Kelly assist.

In the second, Goucher scored to tie the game, but Sean Dacey netted the go-ahead tally with 5:08 left in the second to put UMW up, 3-2, which was their margin at halftime.

The Gophers scored twice in the third, sandwiched around a Dick score with 4:31 remaining. In the fourth, UMW's Johnny Esposito scored with 11:46 to play, but was followed by a tying goal from Goucher. Dick put the Eagles up with 1:11 to play, but the Gophers tied the score with 30 seconds left, and won the game with 3:20 remaining in the first overtime. The Eagles were plagued by eight turnovers in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Senior Matt Prin had nine saves in goal for UMW, who was outshot, 37-28. The Eagles had 38 ground balls to 34 for Goucher, and the Eagles won 12-16 faceoffs.

UMW will visit Marymount University on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
