UMW Men's Lax Tops Eastern, 10-2

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team built a 5-0 first quarter lead and prevailed with a 10-2 victory over visiting Eastern University on Wednesday at the Battleground to improve to 3-3 on the season. The balanced Eagle attack saw four players with two goals on the day.

Both teams struggled offensively at the outset, but the Eagles found their groove midway through the first, as Paul Tunick (Annandale, Va., Woodson) scored on an assist from Luke Dick (Annapolis, MD, Archbishop Spaulding HS) at 8:10 remaining. The Eagles extended the lead to 2-0 less than a minute later, as freshman Chip Pittard (Setauket, NY, Ward Melville) scored unassisted at 7:24 left.

Seniors Kohl Meyer (Shawnee, N.J., Shawnee) and Evan Weiss (Oakton, Va., Madison) teamed up for UMW's third goal, with 4:37 left, and Sean Dacey (Round Hill, Va., Loudoun Valley) scored on a John Bohlinger (Westfield, NJ, Westfield) assist with 2:50 to play. Meyer upped the lead to 5-0 unassisted with 1:56 left in the first.

After Eastern cut the deficit to 6-2 at halftime (with Tunick scoring on a Meyer assist in the second), the Eagles ran off three straight goals in the third, from Weiss, Dick, and Dacey, to lead, 9-2 entering the fourth. Weiss provided his second marker with 6:37 remaining to cap the scoring.

The Eagles led in shots, 32-21, while junior goalie Ryan Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C., Chapel Hill) had eight saves while allowing just two goals for UMW.

Mary Washington will host the College of Wooster on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
