1988 MWC Men's Lacrosse Season in Review

When someone mentions the word "goals" in reference to lacrosse, the natural thought process would be the art of putting the ball into the cage. Obviously, those are of concern to Mary Washington College head coach Pete Ginnegar, but likely more important in the program's third year of existence is the continued pursuit of team "goals." After suffering an 0-13 record in his first year at MWC, Ginnegar led the Eagles to a 6-10 mark in 1988. His goals for 1989 ... a .500 season and a continued push toward success in small college lacrosse along the Atlantic Coast.

Ginnegar will field a young but well-balanced contingent this spring. A trio of quality scorers in sophomores Mick Philp (attack) and Mike Bradley (midfield) and junior Tom McMahon (midfield) will pace the offense, along with the addition of freshmen Marc Rolfe and Todd Tarring. Junior Jeff Oelkers and sophomore Chris Newman will also contribute in the middle. The Eagle offense scored in double figures on four occasions last year, with Philp netting a 1988 team-high five in a 13-8win at Pepperdine.

Anchoring the defense will be senior Sam Flemer, junior Steve Sollohub and sophomore Mike Donaldson. Junior Frank Haun is a strong utility player. Freshmen Keefe Bangert and David Canatsey will vie for the starting goaltender slot.

"We have a fine group of athletes, and they have come back in good shape this season," said Ginnegar. "With many of them being in their third year in the program, we are getting better in terms of stickwork and fundamentals. It will be important to get leadership from the upperclassmen."
