UMW Men's Golf Finishes T-8th Among 17 Teams at Tom Kinder Invitational in First Ever Varsity Match

The University of Mary Washington men's golf team surged to eighth place at the Tom Kinder Invitational following a Tuesday round that saw the Eagles shoot the third-best score of the day. The match was the first as a varsity program for the Eagles, in its first season under head coach Rod Wood.

The Eagles were paced by freshman Ethan Kelly, who shot a combined 146 (+2), which tied for ninth overall, and freshman Phillip Manceri, who shot a combined 148 (+4), including a 70 on Tuesday.

Sophomore Marcus Cigna and freshman Brendan Kelly each shot a 156 (+12).

"I'm extremely proud of how our team handled themselves this weekend", said Coach Wood. "For a new program to start this way is nothing short of miraculous. I challenged the team to shoot 300 and they shot 299... I guess I should have challenged them to shoot 290. I'll do a better job of coaching next time! We didn't just field a team. We fielded a competitive team. I'm proud of the team and the school should be as well."

The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday at the Shenandoah University Invitational.
