UMW Men's Basketball Falls at Christopher Newport, 80-71, in Saturday C2C Clash

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped an 80-71 decision at #25 Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon in Newport News, Va. The Eagles slip to 15-8 on the season.

Christopher Newport jumped out to a lead in the first half, as the Captains shot 45.5% against UMW's nationally-ranked defense, but were unable to shake the Eagles until late, and carried a 42-28 advantage to halftime. 

The Eagles trailed by as many as 21 early in the second half, before chipping away to pull to within 50-38 with a 10-1 run. A Zack Blue layup with 11:31 cut the margin to 54-46, but the Captains upped the lead back to 15, but once again UMW continued to fight, pulling to within five on a Matias Prock three pointer in the final minute, before the Captains connected on free throws down the stretch for the 80-71 final.

Blue led four Eagles in double figures with 14 points, while Prock and Dorian Davis added 12 each. Daniel Petersons cored 10 points and added a team-high nine rebounds.

The Eagles shot 34.8% from the floor (24-69), making 6-16 three point attempts and 17-28 free throws. CNU shot 47.3% (26-55), making 12-25 three point tries and 16-22 free throws.Each team had 43 rebounds.

UMW will be back ina ction on Wednesday, as the Eagles visit Salisbury University at 7:00 p.m.
