UMW Men's Basketball Pulls Away from Averett, 53-44, on Wednesday

Senior forward Daniel Peterson scored a team-high 15 points and junior forward Trey Pittman added 14 to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 53-44 victory at Averett University on Wednesday evening. The Eagles improve to 13-7 on the season.

The score stayed close in the early going, as there were several lead changes and ties in the opening minutes. With 11:03 left in the first, the score stood tied at 11-11, and from there UMW held a slim advantage for the rest of the half, and led, 24-23, at halftime.

In the second, UMW gradually extended its lead to double figures, thanks to a 13-22 shooting performance, all the while limiting the Cougars to just 27.6% shooting from the field.

Peterson shot 7-15 from the floor, making one three point shot. Pittman went 7-10 from the floor en route to his 14 points. Sophomore Dorian Davis led with seven rebounds.

UMW shot 23-48 from the floor on the night (47.8%), making 4-10 three point shots and 3-9 free throws. Averett shot 17-57 (29.8%), making 1-14 three point shots and 9-12 free throws. Averett led in rebounds, 41-31.

The Eagles will be back in action on Friday, when they visit the University of Valley Forge at 6:00 p.m.
