Blue's Career High 24 Lifts UMW Men's Basketball Past Maryville in OT, 79-71

Senior guard Zack Blue scored a career-high 24 points, and the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team survived a wild end of regulation to pull away in overtime, as the Eagles topped Maryville College, 79-71, on Saturday in Atlanta, Ga. The Eagles improve to 8-5 on the season.

UMW steadily built a lead in the first half, taking a 36-28 lead to halftime. But the Scots battled back early in the second half to take a 10 point lead midway through the second, setting up a UMW comeback. 

Senior Daniel Peterson started the run with a three point play, and sophomore Dorian Davis followed wih a layup to bring the Eagles back to within five. railing by seven wih 2:43 left, Peterson added another basket, and senior Cameron McCravy connected on a three pointer to make the game a one-possession affair.

McCravy hit another three to put UMW ahead with 2:10 left, the first of five lead changes before the final horn of regulation. Maryville made a free throw with 20 seconds left to tie the score, and the game would go to overtime.

In the extra frame, the Eagles scored the first seven points, and connected enough free throws to keep the Scots at bay.

Blue made 9-14 shots, including 1-4 three point tries and 5-7 free throws, and added five rebounds and four assists. Davis scored 13 and added 10 rebounds for a double double, and Peterson added 13wih nine boards. McCravy was the fourth Eagle in double digits with 10, including the two key three pointers late in regulation.

The Eagles shot 28-66 from the floor (42.4%), making 4-18 three point attempts and 19-24 free throws. Maryville shot 22-61 (36.1%), making 7-21 three point tries and 20-27 free throws.

UMW will return to action on January 3, when the Eagles host Franklin & Marshall College at 7:00 p.m.
