Rowson, Blue Combine for 38 as UMW Men's Basketball Falls to No. 3 Guilford

Rowson, Blue Combine for 38 as UMW Men's Basketball Falls to No. 3 Guilford

Mary Washington men's basketball's (6-4) Greg Rowson and Zack Blue each scored 19 points to lead the Eagles on Friday night but their efforts fell just short in a 65-62 loss to No. 3 Guilford at the Anderson Center in Fredericksburg, Va.

Rowson went 5-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-5 from deep, while Blue was 6-of-8 and 5-of-7 from beyond the arc -- all of Blue's points came in a second half that felt like a track meet. Neither team could find the bottom of the basket in the first half as the Quakers (5-for-19) took a 19-17 lead into halftime over UMW (6-for-22).

But as soon as the second half started, both teams were unconsious shooting the basketball as the Quakers went 12-for-20 and 8-for-13 (61.5%) from deep. The Eagles, meanwhile, drained eight of their 18 shots beyond the arc in the second half.

On the day, Mary Washington was 20-of-53 (37.7%) overall and 10-of-29 (34.5%) from deep as Guilford got past the Eagles' defense, shooting 17-for-39 (43.6%) and was 9-for-24 from deep. The Quakers, too, drew 28 free throws and made 22 of their attempts. On the other side, the Eagles made 12 of their 20 free throws.

On the defensive end, the Eagles had little trouble forcing turnovers as Guilford recorded 24 of them -- 16 of the Eagles' points came off of Guilford's miscues.

Guilford, at one point, led by as many as 17 in the second half, but the Eagles didn't give up as they chipped the lead down to three in the final seconds of the game, but unfortunately, couldn't complete the comeback on Friday night.

Up next, Mary Washington heads to Bridgewater on Dec. 18 to take on the Eagles. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
