UMW Men's Basketball Tops Southern Va., 73-48, to Improve to 5-2

Sophomore guard Dorian Davis netted a team-high 17 points, and senior guard Matias Prock added 14, as the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team defeated Southern Virginia University, 73-48, on Wednesday night in Buena Vista, Va. The Eagles improve to 5-2 on the season.

The lead exchanged hands four times in the opening nine minutes, until the Eagles turned a 13-13 tie into a 19-13 lead, with four points from Devin Johnson and two more from Prock. A three pointer from senior Daniel Peterson upped the Eagle advantage to 27-19 with 7:04 remaining, and the lead swelled to 10 before a late three from the Knights trimmed the margin to seven points at halftime, 34-27.

In the second half, the Eagles rolled, outscoring the hosts, 39-21, and shooting 54.2% from the floor, making 5-8 three point tries.

Davis made 6-11 shots, including 2-5 three point attempts en route to 17 points, and Prock made 5-7 shots (2-3 on threes) for his 14. Peterson added 11 as the third Eagle in double figures.

UMW shot 44.9% from the floor (22-49), making 8-18 three point tries and 21-25 free throws. SVU shot 35.4% (17-48), making 3-23 long range shots and 11-14 free throws. The Eagles forced 18 turnovers, and outscored the Knights off the bench, 34-8.

UMW will return to action on Saturday, when the Eagles host Marymount University at 3:00 p.m.
