UMW Men’s Basketball Falls at York, 74-60, in CAC Semifinal

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team fell at York College, 74-60, in the Capital Athletic Conference Seminfinal held at York, Pa. on Wednesday evening. The Eagles conclude their season with a 16-11 record.

UMW took an early 7-3 lead as Da'Shawn Cook contributed five points and Trey Barber had a layup just 2:37 into the game. York took a 10-7 lead with 12:48, but the Eagles went on an 8-3 run to take a 15-13 lead that was capped by a Barber layup. 

The two teams went back-and-forth with lead changes over the next few minutes, but a three-pointer from Drew Johnson gave the Eagles a 24-23 lead. Greg Rowson extended UMW's lead to 28-25 as he scooped home a layup with 1:15 left. To end the half, York knocked down a three-pointer with one second left to tie the game at 30. 

Saunders put UMW 34-33 early in the second half as he scored the first two buckets for the Eagles. From there, York put together a 15-2 run that put them up 48-36 with 12:22 to play. UMW got it to within eight as Riley Welch and Saunders both knocked down free throws. 

The Spartans found themselves up 15, 49-44, with 7:21 remaining in the game. Saunders nailed a three-pointer that put UMW down just 12 with 5:33 left. The Eagles kept pushing but could never get into single digits and fell 74-60.

Saunders led the team with 18 points on 5-9 shooting from the field. Barber added 11 points on 5-11 shooting. Drew Johnson led the team with seven rebounds.

UMW shot 20-52 (38.5%) from the field, 4-18 (22.2%) from three-point range, and 16-17 (94.1%) from the free throw line.
