The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team defeated Southern Virginia University, 107-76, on Wednesday evening in Capital Athletic Conference action. Junior Drew Johnson broke the school record for three-pointers made in a game with 13 that was previously held by Mike Lee in 2005 (11) and the CAC record, held by Mike Connelly of Catholic (11) in 1992. The Eagles also broke the school and CAC team record for three-pointers made in a game with 27.
Greg Rowson got the Eagles on the board first with a three-pointer, followed by a three-pointer by Anias Saunders. UMW would extend their lead when Johnson sunk two three-pointers back to back. A steal by Rowson would allow Johnson to make his third three-pointer of the night bringing the score to 15-3. Trey Barber would add two free throws extending the Eagles lead to 16.
The Knights would add to the board after sinking three free throws but the Eagles would respond with three-point baskets by Wayne Clevert and Riley Welch giving UMW a 30-8 lead. After a three-pointer by the Knights, Johnson would add two more three-point baskets followed by Ra'Shawn Cook drilling a his first three-pointer of the night giving the Eagles a 22-point lead. The Knights would answer but three-pointers by Welch, Cook and Saunders would put the Eagles up by 23. The Knights would close out the first half with a three-pointer bringing the score to 54-38 going into halftime.
Johnson would start the second half by sinking his seventh three-pointer of the evening. The Eagles would continue their lead with Johnson knocking seven more three-pointers to bring the score to 86-59. After two free throws made by the Knights, Saunders brought the Eagles to a 24-point lead after a layup. Welch followed with two three-points and Saunders added one to give UMW a 101-69 advantage. Patrick Smedley would put the Eagles up by 33 after netting a three-pointer of his own.
Johnson led the team with 39 points and 13-14 shooting from the three-point line. Welch followed with points 16 and Saunders with 13.
The Eagles shot 38-63 (60.3%) from the field, 27-41 (65.9%) from three-point range, and 4-8 (50%) from the free throw line.
UMW will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to Christopher Newport University for a game at 3 p.m.
