UMW Men’s Basketball Falls at Salisbury, 75-65, on Wednesday Evening

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team fell at Salisbury University, 75-65, on Wednesday evening in Salisbury, MD. The Eagles slip to 11-6 overall, and 1-1 in the CAC. Sophomore Greg Rowson led the team with 15 points. 

After a quick 5-0 start from Salisbury, the Eagles scored eight in a row to take the lead 8-5 on a three-pointer from Drew Johnson with 14:27 to play. Riley Welch drained a three-pointer on an assist from Anias Saunders to extend UMW's lead to 16-11. Salisbury answered with a 13-4 run and took a 24-20 advantage with 8:47 remaining in the half.

A Saunders layup with 6:53 to go put the Eagles down just three, 29-26. The Seagulls knocked down a three-pointer with 4:31 left to take a 38-31 lead. UMW shut down Salisbury over the last 4:31 and scored five points before the half to put the game at 38-36. 

Out of the half, Rowson knocked down two free throws to tie the game at 38-38. The two teams exchanged buckets over the next two minutes until Salisbury took a 46-43 lead with 16:56 to play. UMW fought back and hit two straight three-pointers, one from Johnson and one from Welch, to put the Eagles on top 49-47. 

With the score tied at 51 a piece, Salisbury scored nine straight points to go up 60-51 with 9:50 remaining in the game. The Seagulls extended their lead to 12, 68-56, with 5:41 left in the game. A Welch free throw and three-pointer drew the Eagles within eight, 68-60, with just 2:35 remaining. Trey Barber drained a three-pointer with just 16 seconds left to pull UMW within six. Salisbury closed the game out from there to win 75-65.

Da'Shawn Cook had 13 points, while Welch chipped in 12 points. Johnson added 11 points and Barber had 10 points.

The Eagles shot 21-64 (32.8%) from the field, 9-37 (24.3%) from three-point range, and 14-17 (82.4%) from the free throw line. 

UMW will play their next game on Saturday as they will host CNU at 3 p.m.
