UMW Men’s Basketball Downs Marymount, 78-60, on Saturday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team downed Marymount University, 78-60, on Saturday afternoon in Arlington, VA. The Eagles improve to 7-2 overall on the season. Sophomore Greg Rowson led the team with 26 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. 

In the early going, the Saints jumped out to a 9-5 advantage just 5:39 into the game. Marymount upped their leaf to seven, 15-8, but a layup by Riley Welch and a three-point play from Rowson put the Eagles down two with 10:01 to play.

The two teams kept the game close but a run from the Saints put them back up six, 24-18. With Marymount leading 30-24, Welch closed the half with five straight points to put the score at 30-29.

The Eagles came out of the half on fire as they connected on their first five shots. Trey Barber began with a layup, then Drew Johnson made a three-pointer, Rowson then had eight straight points to put UMW up 42-32 with 16:47 to play. Johnson drained another three-pointer 12:41 to play that gave the Eagles a 13 point lead. 

UMW kept pouring it on as they went up 18, 68-50, with 6:03 left as Da'Shawn Cook made two free throws. The Eagles cruised to the finish line from there and defeated Marymount, 78-60.

Johnson added 18 points, as he finished the game 5-7 from the three-point line. Welch chipped in 13 points off the bench. 

The Eagles shot 25-51(49.0%) from the field, 12-24 (50.0%) from the three-point line, and 14-18 (77.8%) from the free throw line. UMW dished out 15 assists and had nine steals on the day.

UMW will be back in action on 12/16 as they will travel to the west coast to face off at Whitworth with tip-off set for 10:00 p.m.
