UMW Men’s Basketball Falls to Virginia Wesleyan, 72-60, on Wednesday

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team fell to Virginia Wesleyan University, 72-60, on Wednesday evening in Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles slip to 6-2 overall on the season. 

In the early going, UMW jumped out to an 8-5 lead as Greg Rowson scored six of those. Virginia Wesleyan tied the game at 16 with 9:43 left. The Marlins went ahead 24-19 with 6:49 remaining in the half. The Eagles then went on an 11-2 run to close the half and take a 30-24 advantage into the locker room.

Out of the half, the Marlins went on a 13-4 run to go up 39-34. The Eagles kept the game close as they pulled within just two points, 45-43, with 12:29 remaining in the game. VWU kept their foot on the gas pedal and went up 57-48 on a free throw with 7:33 left. UMW kept pushing and got to within six, 61-55, on a Rowson free throw with 5:04 to play. That was the closest the Eagles would get and VWU went on to win 72-60.

Rowson led the team with 20 points, while Da'Shawn Cook added 13 points on the day. Riley Welch chipped in 10 points off the bench.

The Eagles shot 20-59 (33.9%), 2-20 (10.0%), and 18-24 (75.0%) from the free throw line. 

UMW will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Marymount for a game at 3:30 p.m.
