Cook, Rowson Help Lead UMW Men’s Basketball Past Randolph, 87-72, on Saturday

Sophomore Da'Shawn Cook scored 29 points and sophomore Greg Rowson added 20 points to help lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team past Randolph College, 87-72, on Saturday evening in the CNU Classic. The Eagles improve to 6-1 overall on the season.

In the early going, the two teams matched each basket and saw the game tied at five a piece. From there, UMW jumped ahead as they went on an 8-0 run to take the lead 13-5. Cook accounted for all eight points, knocking down two three-pointers. Ra'Shawn Cook scooped home a layup with 10:27 left in the half to put the Eagles up 23-8. 

The Wildcats made a run and got within single digits, 28-21, as they knocked down a three-pointer with 6:51 to play. Rowson extended the lead back to to 10, 34-24, with a layup. Randolph closed the half on a run and nailed a three-pointer with two seconds left and the Eagles held a 42-38 advantage.

In the early minutes of the second half, the Wildcats took a 43-42 lead. UMW took back the lead and kept rolling as they went up 51-43 on a Trey Barber layup off of an offensive rebound. Towson through down a thunderous dunk while getting fouled with 13:22 left in the game that extended the Eagles' lead to 60-51.

Randolph stayed in the game and didn't give up as they closed the gap to four, 63-59, with 10:20 left. Rowson scooped home another layup with 5:07 remaining in the game that put UMW up 75-64. The Eagles kept their tempo up and closed the game out from there by winning 87-72.

Trey Barber recorded a second straight double-double as he had 10 points and 12 rebounds. R. Cook added 10 points off the bench on 4-5 shooting from the field. 

The Eagles shot 33-64 (51.6%) from the field, 10-28 (35.7%) from three-point range, and 11-14 (78.6%) from the free throw line. UMW out rebounded Randolph College 42-38.

UMW will be back in action on 12/4 as they will host Virginia Wesleyan at 7 p.m.
