UMW Men’s Basketball Tops Eastern Mennonite, 82-55, on Tuesday Evening

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team topped Eastern Mennonite University, 82-55, on Tuesday evening in Harrisonburg, VA. The Eagles improve to 2-0 overall on the season. Junior Drew Johnson recorded his second straight double-double as he had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Anias Saunders led the Eagles in scoring with 17 points and also collected eight rebounds on the night.  

UMW jumped out to an early 10-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game. Riley Welch got the scoring started with a three-pointer, Trey Barber then made a three-pointer, Saunders made a jump shot, and then Da'Shawn Cook nailed a jump shot to cap the early run. After hovering around a 10 points lead, the Eagles grew their lead to 15, 20-5, with 12:35 left on a jump shot from Cook. 

The Royals got within 12, 25-13, but a three-pointer from Johnson put the Eagles back up 15 with 8:16 to play in the half. After EMU cut UMW's lead to 10, 33-23, with 5:16 remaining the Eagles closed out the half on a 12-3 run. Saunders accounted for six of those point and helped the Eagles hold a 45-26 lead going into the locker room. 

UMW gradually increased their lead in the first few minutes of the second half. Barber scored the first three points out of the half and then Saunders made a layup to go up 23, 50-27. Johnson gave them a 26 point advantage as he drained a three-pointer with 16:45 to play. 

The Eagles maintained their 26 point lead, 66-40, as Barber grabbed an offensive rebound and made a layup with nine minutes to go in the ball game. Johnson scooped home a layup with 4:16 left in the game that put UMW up 29, 75-46. Saunders made a three-pointer a minute later to give the Eagles their largest lead of the night at 30, 78-48. UMW closed out the game and took the win 82-55. 

Barber added 13 points and eight rebounds, while Cook scored 10 points. The Eagles shot 35-77 (45.5%) from the field, 9-24 (37.5%) from three-point range, and 3-5 (60.0%) from the free throw line. UMW held a large advantage in the rebounding department as they won the battle 50-31.

UMW will be back in action on Saturday when they host Merchant Marine at 7 p.m. as part of the Hyatt Place Tipoff Tournament.
