Johnny Cronin Named UMW Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year

University of Mary Washington basketball standout Johnny Cronin has been named as the 2018-19 UMW Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as announced on Wednesday.

A political science major, Cronin graduated last month with a 3.82 cumulative grade-point average. He was a member of the UMW Honors Program, and wrote his honors thesis for the political science department. He served as Vice President of Pi Sigma Alpha Honor Society and graduated Summa Cum Laude. In addition, he was the winner of 2019 UMW Alumni Award, and was a Phi Beta Kappa member.

Athletically, he was a three-year starter and team captain. Cronin holds the UMW career record for field goal percentage (63.2%), after breaking his own season record this year by shooting 66.2% from the field. He ranked nationally in field goal percentage, leading the Capital Athletic Conference in rebounding (9.7 per game) as well. He scored 964 points in his senior season, averagng 12.5 points per contest.

He gained first team all-region honors by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, as well as first team all-conference and all-state honors as well. In addition, he was named to the CoSIDA Academic all-district first team.
