UMW Men’s Basketball Falls at #17 CNU, 80-66, on Saturday Evening

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team fell at seventeenth-ranked Christopher Newport University, 80-66, on Saturday evening in Newport News, VA. The Eagles drop to 14-7 overall, and 6-4 in the CAC. Freshman Da'Shawn Cook led the team with 15 points.

In the first 3:11, the Captains got out to an 11-5 lead as they knocked down a few three-pointers. Cook knocked down a free throw with 14:29 to play, to get the Eagles within just four, 13-9. CNU extended their to lead to nine, 20-11, after a layup with 9:19 left in the first half. 

Over the next 5:09, the Eagles held CNU scoreless and went on an 8-0 run to get within just one point, 20-19. Khiorie Stewart, Ra'Shawn Cook, Mark Madison, and Greg Rowson all supplied points during that run. The Captains countered with an 8-0 run from there to go back up nine, 28-19, with 2:12 remaining. 

UMW then scored eight unanswered to get within just one, 28-27, as Madison drained a three-pointer with just 48 seconds left. CNU scored the last bucket of the half and they took a 30-27 lead into the half. 

The Captains started the second half with five straight points to take an eight point lead.
UMW answered the call and went on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 35 a piece with 16:53 to play. CNU retook the lead and went up seven, 44-37, with 14:26 remaining in the game. They kept a seven point lead with 12:18 showing on the clock, but the Eagles scored five straight points to go down just two, 49-47, after a R. Cook jumper with 10:33 left. 

UMW then went scoreless for about four minutes, and the Captains took advantage as they upped their lead to 55-48. Madison kept the Eagles within striking distance as he knocked down a three-pointer with 5:24 remaining to put the score at 59-52. CNU grew their lead to sixteen, 70-54, with just 3:16 remaining in the game. UMW couldn't get any closer from there and fell 80-66.

Madison chipped in 14 points, and Rowson added 11 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Johnny Cronin has eight points, eight rebounds, and four steals on the night.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday as they will host St. Mary's at 8 p.m.
