The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team fell at Salisbury University, 79-66, on Wednesday evening in Salisbury, MD. The Eagles slip to 14-6 overall, and 6-3 in the CAC. Greg Rowson led the way with 19 points and Drew Johnson added 17 points.
Salisbury got out to an early lead as they went up 8-0 in the first 2:35. Jacob Williams and Johnny Cronin put an end to that run as they both scooped home a layup over the next minute to get within four. Johnson buried his first three-pointer of the gamer with 13:42 to play that kept the Eagles down just four, 12-8.
The Seagulls grew their lead to 12, 20-8, with 12:02 remaining. UMW then went on a 9-0 run to pull within just three points as Da'Shawn Cook scored seven of those points. The Seagulls went back up seven on a made layup with 6:37 to play in the half. Mark Madison made a free throw to bring the Eagles within four, 31-27, with 2:14 left. The Seagulls closed the last 2:14 on a 10-3 run that put them ahead 41-30 going into the break.
UMW kept their deficit at 11 over the first 3:15 of the game to stay within striking distance. Over the next three minutes, the two teams traded buckets to put the score at 55-44. Salisbury then reeled off eight straight points to take a 63-44 advantage with 12:31 remaining.
Johnny Cronin flushed home a layup with 9:58 to play to bring the Eagles within 15, 64-49. Salisbury kept knocking down shots over the next few minutes and maintained their lead to stay ahead 72-56 with just 6:41 remaining in the game. UMW rallied as they scored nine straight points, including two three-pointers from Johnson, to put the score at 72-65 with 3:58 left. The Eagles managed to score just two points in the last 3:58 and Salisbury held on to win 79-66.
Madison added 12 points and Cook scored 10 points to go along with five steals on the night. Cronin hauled in six rebounds for the Eagles.
UMW will be back in action on Saturday as they will travel to CAC foe, CNU, for a tip-off set at 4 p.m.
