UMW Men’s Basketball Downs Penn St.-Harrisburg, 69-61, on Saturday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team downed Penn St.-Harrisburg College, 69-61, on Saturday afternoon in Middletown, PA. UMW improves to 11-4 overall, and 3-1 in the CAC. Freshmen Da'Shawn Cook and Greg Rowson led the way with 17 points a piece, while Mark Madison pitched in 16 points. 

In the early going, the two teams played an even first 5:18 as nobody held a lead of more than three points. Mark Madison began the game by knocking down two three-pointers and then Greg Rowson followed that up with a three-pointer of his own to put UMW up 9-6. Penn St.-Harrisburg took a lead of 14-13 with 15:11 left and then Drew Johnson nailed a three-pointer to put the game at 17 a piece.

Both teams went scoreless over the next two minutes until A.J. Robinson broke the drought with a free throw and then Johnny Cronin knocked down two free throws of his own after that to give the Eagles a 20-17 lead with 9:42 to play. UMW grew their lead to six, 28-22, courtesy of another three-pointer by Rowson with 5:32 remaining. The Lions scored five straight to cut the lead to one, but then the Eagles used a 7-1 run to end the half and take a 35-28 lead.

Out of the half, UMW put together a 7-2 run to build their lead up to 12, 42-30. The Nittany Lions hit a three-pointer to end the run but the Eagles came right back at them and scored seven straight points. Two Da'Shawn Cook free throws, a three-pointer from Johnson, and a layup from Rowson extended the lead to 16, 49-33, with 14:28 remaining. With 11:35 to play, Robinson knocked down a jumper to give UMW their largest lead of the day at 19, 53-34.

Penn St.-Harrisburg answered and scored the next six points to cut into the Eagles' lead. UMW grew their lead back up to 18 on a Cook three-pointer with 6:53 to play. Jacob Williams knocked down two free throws to keep UMW up 15, 64-49, with 2:57 remaining. The Nittany Lions went on a quick 8-0 run until Williams scooped home a layup with 1:13 to play to put the game at 66-57. From there, UMW knocked down a couple late free throws and sealed the game by winning 69-61.

The Eagles shot 21-57 (36.8%) from the field, 9-26 (34.6%) from three-point range, and 18-21 (85.7%) from the free throw line. UMW dished out 10 assists and created 11 steals. 

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday as they will travel to St. Mary's for a game at 8 p.m.
