UMW Men’s Basketball Falls at Roanoke, 83-67, on Sunday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team fell at Roanoke College, 83-67, on Sunday afternoon in the Cregger Invitational held in Roanoke, VA. The Eagles fall to 8-3 on the season. Greg Rowson led the team with 22 points as he went 7-14 from the field, including 5-11 from the three-point line. 

In the early going, the Eagles got out to a hot start. Over the first 4:16, UMW outscored Roanoke 13-4 with Rowson scoring eight of those points. Rowson knocked down another three-pointer with 14:40 to play to keep the Eagles up 11, 16-5. The Maroons then scored five straight to go down just six points. 

Johnny Cronin had a three-point play and then made a layup with 8:15 remaining in the first half to put UMW up eight, 21-13. From there, the Maroons went on a 12-0 run to take a 25-21 lead with just 3:19 left in the first half. UMW answered that run with a run of their own as they rattled off seven straight to retake the lead 28-25. Roanoke hit a three-pointer with just 58 seconds left to tie the game up. Jacob Williams hit a three-pointer to put the Eagles ahead 31-28 and they would take that lead into the half. 

Out of the half, the Maroons scored the first bucket to tie the game. Cronin and Mark Madison each scored a layup to help the Eagles go up four, 35-31. With 13:37 to play, Riley Welch knocked down a three-pointer that gave UMW a five point advantage, 43-38. Over the next 2:24, Roanoke went on an 8-2 run to retake the lead 46-45. UMW scored six straight points as Da'Shawn Cook knocked down a three-pointer and got fouled to put the Eagles back up 51-46.

The game of runs continued as the Maroons scored five straight to tie the game up at 51 and then the Eagles then scored five straight on two free throws by Williams and a Cook three-pointer to go up 56-51 with 8:40 remaining. UMW held their five point lead with 6:38 to play as Cronin knocked down two free throws. Roanoke then went on a 14-3 run to take a 69-63 lead with just 2:47 to go. The Eagles managed just four points from there and Roanoke won the game 83-67. 

Cronin finished with 15 points, going 5-6 from the field and free throw line, to go along with seven rebounds. Cook added 12 points and five assists. 

UMW shot 21-53 (39.6%) from the field, 12-38 (31.6%) from the three-point line, and 13-15 (86.7%) from the free throw line. The Eagles pulled down 28 rebounds and dished out 16 assists.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday as they will travel to Frostburg St. for a game at 8 p.m.
