Johnson's Return, Balanced Attack Leads UMW Men's Basketball Past John Carroll

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team saw six players score at least seven points, led by the return from injury of sophomore Drew Johnson and his team-high 17 points, in a 76-64 victory over John Carroll University on Saturday in Salem, Va. The Eagles, who got 15 points from freshman Greg Rowson and 10 from senior Johnny Cronin, improve to 8-2 on the season and run their win streak to five straight.

The Blue Streak opened the game with a pair of three pointers, and held the lead until the Eagles were able to knot the score at 10-10 with 13:31 remaining on a three pointer from sophomore Riley Welch. After a John Carroll old fashioned three-point play, Johnson marked his return by connecting with a three pointer - one of four in the first half -  to tie the score at 13. The lead would change hands four times before a Rowson Three pointer tied the score at 23-23 with 8:07 left before halftime.

A pair of Johnson threes gave the Eagles a six-point cushion at 29-23 with 6:39 to go, but John Carroll chipped away until regaining the lead with 3:07 on the clock, and held on with a 36-35 lead at halftime.

In the second, the Eagles slowly built a margin, as Rowson, Mark Madison, and Da'Shawn Cook each scored three point baskets to give the Eagles a 46-42 lead with 16:42 remaining. Once again the Blue Streak answered with a run to take a 51-48 advantage with 12:44 to play, but the Eagles quickly tied the score on a Jacob Williams three, and Welch followed with a basket to give UMW a lead they wouldn't surrender.

A 9-0 UMW run propelled the lead to 65-56 with 6:25 to go, and baskets from Rowson and Williams down the stretch kept the lead at double figures. Rowson and Mike Janowski each were perfect from the free throw line in the waning seconds to give the Eagles the 12-point margin of victory.

Johnson led the Eagles with 17 points on 6-9 shooting (5-7 on three point tries), while Rowson had 15 points and eight rebounds. Cronin scored 10 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for another double-double, and Janowski scored nine, Welch eight, and Williams seven.

The Eagles shot 42.9% from the field (25-59), making 13 of 34 three point attempts, and went 13-22 from the free throw line. John Carroll shot 35.7% (25-70), making 11-39 three pointers and 3-7 free throws.

UMW will face host Roanoke College on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
