UMW Men’s Basketball Falls at CNU, 90-74, in CAC Semifinals

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team was defeated 90-74 by Christopher Newport University on Thursday night in the semifinals of the CAC Tournament in Newport News, VA. Eric Shaw led the Eagles with 19 points. The Eagles finish the season 19-9.

CNU got it going early as they jumped out to an 11-2 lead over the first 4:08 of the game. UMW scored five straight, two from A.J. Robinson and three from Jacob Williams, to cut the lead to 11-7 with 14:56 left. The Captains went on a 16-0 run over the next 4:30 to push their lead to 27-7. 

Eric Shaw made a layup to put an end to that run with 10:17 to play in the first half. Robinson knocked down a three-pointer with 7:12 remaining that put the score at 38-16. Williams scooped in a layup with 4:40 left in the first half that cut the lead to 43-22. Shaw made two free throws with 21 seconds left and UMW went into halftime down 50-26.

Williams started out the second half with a layup assisted from Johnny Cronin just 12 seconds in. Shaw knocked down a jumper with 16:23 to play in the game that put the game at 54-32. From there the Eagles went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 15, 54-39, with 13:15 left.

The Captains pushed the lead back to 20, but the Eagles scored seven straight to get it to within 13, 59-46, with 11:20 left. Shaw hit two free throws to cut it to 12, 63-51 with just under 10 minutes to play. Stewart hit a pull-up jumper to get it within eight, 63-55, with 8:28 remaining.

A layup from Williams with 7:50 left kept the game within eight, 68-57. From there CNU went on a 10-0 run to grow the lead to 18, 75-57. Shaw made a layup with 4:16 left to cut it to 14. Stewart made three-pointer with 1:29 left and put the score at 86-72. The Eagles could not get any closer and CNU won the game 90-74.

Stewart scored 18 points on 7-15 shooting, while Robinson added 15 points. Williams chipped in 11 points as well. Aaron McFarland led CNU with 35 points.

UMW shot 41.8% (28-67) from the field, making 6-16 three-pointers, and 12-16 free throws. CNU shot 57.1% (28-49) from the field, making 9-21 three-pointers, and 25-28 free throws. UMW dished out 12 assists on the night.

CNU moves on to the CAC finals as they will host York (Pa.) on Saturday. The Eagles finish with their best season since 2013-2014.
