Balanced Scoring Attack Leads UMW Men’s Basketball Past Frostburg St., 82-78, in 1st Round of CAC Tournament

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team had six players score in double figures to help defeat Frostburg St. University, 82-78, on Tuesday night in the CAC Tournament 1st round game at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 19-7 and will travel to top-seeded Christopher Newport University on Thursday night for CAC semifinals.

Eric Shaw got the scoring started as he knocked down a three-pointer 55 seconds into the game. Shaw made a jump shot and the A.J. Robinson hit a three-pointer to increase the UMW lead to four, 9-5, with 16:10 remaining in the first half. Robinson followed up that three-pointer with a four point play and the Eagles were up 13-5. 

UMW's first double digit lead of the game came with 14:46 left to play as Khiorie Stewart made a layup to go up 18-7. The Bobcats then went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 18-13. The Eagles grew the lead back to 10, 27-17, on a Drew Johnson three-pointer with 10:22 remaining in the game. 

Shaw knocked down two free throws with 8:28 left to go up 14, 33-19. A layup from Frostburg St. cut the lead to nine, 36-27, with 4:48 left. Jacob Williams scooped in a layup to make the score 40-27, with just over three minutes to play. The Bobcats cut into the lead before halftime, but the Eagles went into halftime up 43-35.

UMW got it going early in the second half as Robinson made a three-pointer and then Cronin made a layup as the Eagles went up 48-35. Stewart gave UMW a 16 point lead, 56-40, on a layup with 15:55 left. 

Cronin made a layup on a Stewart assist with 12:56 left and the Eagles maintained their 16 point lead, 62-46. UMW went on a drought and the Bobcats scored six straight points to cut it to 10, 62-52, with 8:25 remaining. Frostburg St. drained three three-pointers in a row and they cut it to three, 66-63, with 6:10 left in the game. 

Cronin knocked down a jump shot as the shot clock expired to get the Eagles up 72-63 with 4:18 left. Cronin added a fast break layup on an assist from Williams to UMW up 77-71. The Bobcats made a run at it as they cut it to two, 80-78, with nine-seconds remaining. After a couple of missed free throws, UMW made a key defensive stop and then Stewart knocked down two free throws that sealed the win for the Eagles.

Shaw paced UMW with 20 points while adding seven rebounds and six assists. Robinson scored 13 points on 4-6 shooting, and Stewart added 12 points. Cronin finished 6-7 from the field scoring 12 points and hauling in 11 rebounds. Johnson and Williams scored 10 points a piece. Edwin Cole led the way for the Bobcats as he scored 25 points and pulled in 17 rebounds.

UMW shot 57.4% (31-54) from the field, making 8-21 three-pointers, and 12-18 free throws. Frostburg St. shot 49.2% (29-59) from the field, making 5-15 three-pointers, and 15-22 free throws. UMW dished out 18 assists and recorded eight steals. 

UMW will travel to CNU on Thursday night for the CAC semifinals as they will tip-off at 8 p.m.
