Junior Jacob Williams made a late layup to help the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team knock previously undefeated #4 York College of Pa., 59-57, on Saturday afternoon in Ron Rosner Arena. This was the highest ranked team UMW has defeated in school history and their first win over a ranked opponent since 2013-2014. The Eagles improve to 12-5 overall, and 6-4 in the CAC. Freshman Drew Johnson led the Eagles with 14 points on the day.

In the early going, York got out to a 7-3 lead just 2:58 into the game. Sophomore A.J. Robinson and Johnson both made three-pointers to tie the score up at 11-11 with 15:24 left in the game. Khiorie Stewart made a jump shot and then knocked down a free throw to give the Eagles an 18-14 lead with 12:36 remaining. 

The Spartans proceeded to go on a 7-0 run and take back the lea 21-18 with 9:36 left. Williams made a layup with 5:45 left that put UMW back on top 25-23. Johnson made another three-pointer with 4:26 left and that pushed the lead to 7, 30-23. 

Freshman Serge Ekpuk knocked down two free throws with 1:38 left that gave the Eagles a 33-29 lead. York finished the half by scoring five straight and the Spartans held the lead at halftime 34-33.

After a made free throw by York to begin the second half, the Eagles scored the next four to take the lead 37-35 with 17:15 to play. Mark Madison made a jump shot with 12:52 left to push the UMW lead to six, 45-39. Williams made a layup to give UMW an eight point lead, 47-39, with 11:40 left in the game.

Over the next 4:22, the Spartans went on a 7-2 run, and cut the lead to three, 49-46. York made a layup with 4:29 left and they were down 51-50, but a layup by Johnny Cronin gave the Eagles a three point cushion, 53-50. York tied the game up, 53-53 with 2:28 left. 

After they tied it up, Robinson came down the court and noticed nobody was guarding him so he shot a three-pointer and drained it to put UMW up 56-53 with 2:10 left in the game. York cut it within one again, and this time Williams made a clutch layup that would put the Eagles up three, 58-55, with only 45 seconds left in the game. Shaw drained a late free throw and then York did not get a shot off as time expired and UMW home the win 59-57.

Cronin and Robinson both scored 11 points a piece for the Eagles. Williams scored eight points and also hauled in a team-high seven rebounds on the day. York was led by Dalton Myers who scored 20 points.

The Eagles shot 39.7% (23-58) from the field, making 7-23 three-pointers, and 6-10 free throws. The Spartans shot 40.7% (22-54) from the field, making 5-21three-pointers, and 8-11 free throws. The Eagles turned the Spartans over 20 times and dished out 10 assists.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday as they host Southern Virginia University at 8 p.m.
