UMW Men Fall at CNU, 76-62, on Wednesday Night

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team was defeated, 76-62, by Christopher Newport University on Wednesday Night in Newport News, VA. The Eagles fall to 11-5 overall, and 5-4 in the Capital Athletic Conference. Senior Eric Shaw led the Eagles with 19 points, seven rebounds, and five blocks on the night.

In the early going, UMW jumped out to a hot start as Shaw scored six of the first eight points for the Eagles and they took the lead 8-2, 3:25 into the game. The Eagles pushed the lead to eight, 15-7, on a layup by sophomore Mark Madison with 13:55 remaining in the first half. Junior Khiorie Stewart grew the lead to nine, 19-10, as he converted a layup with 11:33 left.

Over the next 4:14, the Eagles went cold and CNU took advantage as they went on a 9-0 run to tie the game up with 7:19 to play. Shaw put an end to that run with a jumper and the Eagles went back up 21-19. The Captains grabbed the lead, 23-21, with 5:13 to play on a layup. 

Shaw knocked down two free throws with 2:15 left in the half to put the Eagles down 26-24. Over the last 2:15, CNU went on a 7-1 run to go into halftime up 33-25. Shaw led the Eagles with 13 points in the first half. 

Sophomore A.J. Robinson got the second half started as he nailed a three-pointer and brought UMW within five, 33-28. Drew Johnson made his first three-pointer of the night with 17:24 left to cut the lead to 37-33. The Captains went up 12, 48-36, with 14:30 left but the Eagles scored four straight to cut it to eight, 48-40 with just under 13 minutes left to play.

CNU responded to those four straight points from UMW and they went on a 7-0 run to push the lead to 15, 55-40 with 11:35 left in the game. Shaw knocked down two free throws to end that run, but the Captains scored five straight and with up 18, 60-42, with 8:04 left. 

Mark Madison scored eight straight points for the Eagles and brought them within 13, 63-50, with 5:36 left. In the final 5:36, CNU outscored UMW 13-12 and took the win 76-62.

Madison scored 14 out of his 18 points in the second half going 4-6 from three-point range. Johnson netted seven points with three rebounds and two steals. Spencer Marin led the Captains in scoring with 13 points. 

The Eagles shot 30.2% (19-63) from the field, making 8-21 three-pointers, and 16-24 free throws. The Captains shot 49.2% (30-61) from the field, making 10-26 three-pointers, and 6-14 free throws.

UMW will be back in action on Saturday at 3 p.m. as they host #4 York in a CAC showdown.
