UMW Falls to Frostburg St., 68-63, on Wednesday Night

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team was defeated by Frostburg St., 68-63, on Wednesday night in Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles fall to 10-4 overall, and 4-3 in the CAC. Junior Johnny Cronin led the way with 18 points.

Senior Eric Shaw scored the first five points for the Eagles and put them up 5-3 just 1:54 into the game. A layup from Cronin gave the Eagles a 7-5 lead with 17:33 left. Over the next 5:47 there was a total of six points. UMW started a mini run when they scored six points in a row to grab the lead 13-9 with 9:37 left on a free throw from Shaw.

From there, the Bobcats went on a 15-1 run to take back the lead at 24-14 with 3:43 left. Coach Kahn made a change and put in some back ups that brought great energy for the Eagles. Freshman Drew Johnson knocked down three free throws and a three-pointer to put the Eagles down 24-20 with 51 seconds left. The Bobcats made a layup with 29 seconds, but sophomore Austin Hall nailed a three-pointer with eight-seconds left and put UMW down 26-23 going into the second half. The Eagles shot just 20.0% in the first half.

Frostburg St. started the second half hot, and the Eagles did not. The Bobcats went on a 21-2 run over the first 6:54 to push the lead to 47-25. Cronin scored the next five points and put the Eagles down 47-30. Cronin then managed to score the next eight points for the Eagles and with 8:46 left, UMW was down 54-38.

Sophomore Mark Madison made a layup with 6:03 left to get the Eagles within 12, 60-48. Over the next 2:47, the Eagles went on an 8-2 run that cut the score to 62-56. With 50 seconds left Madison nailed a three-pointer to put UMW down 3, 64-61. The Bobcats knocked down some late free throws and won the game 68-63.

Madison added 15 points for the Eagles. Shaw and Johnson both scored 12 points a piece. Jordan Johnson led the Bobcats with 17 points.

The Eagles shot 30.3% (20-66) from the field, making 7-28 three-pointers, and 16-25 free throws. The Bobcats shot 38.8% (26-67) from the field, making 5-10 three-pointers, and 11-22 free throws. UMW dished out 15 assists on the night.

UMW will travel to Marymount on Saturday at 3 p.m. for a CAC showdown.
